Bike 86 spectacular miles around the perimeter of the Island of the Sky in Canyonlands National Park.

A must on any biker’s bucket list is the White Rim Trail mountain bike tour in Canyonlands National Park. This adventure is operated by our best-in-class partners at Holiday River Expeditions. These local experts offer you the chance to do it the easy way: with professional guides to handle cooking and logistics and a 4×4 support van to carry the load so that all you have to do is pedal—and enjoy the view!

Travel along the iconic sandstone bench around the “Island in the Sky”. See Musselman Arch, Monument Basin, Turks Head, Candlestick Tower, and White Crack, a perch 1,000 feet above the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers in the center of Canyonlands…what some call the center of the universe. If you only have time for one Moab-area multi-day bike trip, the White Rim Trail should be the one. Holiday’s White Rim Trail mountain bike tour can also be combined with a rafting trip on the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon for the ultimate seven-day multi-sport adventure vacation.

Itinerary
Itinerary
On a 3-day trip, you can expect to cover the same terrain but at a quicker pace. The first day will be similar, but day two will lead you a bit further along, camping on the far side of Murphy’s Hogback, usually near the iconic Candlestick Tower. The third day will finish with the few extra miles to Potato Bottom, Hardscrabble, and the final climb out. Please keep in mind that the itinerary of any human-powered adventure (like a bike trip!) must be flexible by necessity. This is a sample itinerary.

    Day number 0
Meet at the Holiday River Expeditions Headquarters in Green River, Utah, at 7:00 p.m. the night before your trip. Bring your bikes, any personal drinks, and your questions! We will inspect personal bikes and set up rental bikes, hand out rental sleep kits, collect personal drinks and gear, answer questions, and go over final trip details (like at what time you'll meet the next morning!). You can also buy any last minute items from their accessories store at this time. Please note: if you are providing your own bike, please make sure that it is in good repair; we recommend a complete service by a professional shop prior to the trip. Guests with bikes that fail inspection will be asked to rent a Holiday bike for $205.00/person.
  • 1
    Day number 1
Meet back at HRE headquarters in Green River at the time established at the pre-trip meeting. Have your gear packed into an “overnight bag” and a “day bag” so that it can be loaded into the van efficiently and be on your way. Business completed, we’ll hop in the vans for a two-hour ride to the park entrance and the head of the Shafer Trail. The first hour’s ride will take the group on a soaring, switchbacking downhill onto the white rim sandstone, then roll across gentle ups and downs toward Musselman Arch. The trail continues to wind southward as it follows the meandering course of the Colorado River. Camp is made at (or near) the Gooseberry Trail.
  • 2
    Day number 2
Our ride will take us over undulating roads past the white, sandstone-capped monoliths of Monument and Twin basins. Then in the afternoon, ride up to Murphy’s Hogback, the first of this trip’s challenging uphill stretches. After conquering the hill we’ll be rewarded with a campsite at the top, with 360-degree views of red rock canyons and pillars. Somewhere far below us, the Green and Colorado rivers meet.
  • 3
    Day number 3
After a hearty breakfast and coffee, we’ll drop off of Murphy’s Hogback and roll our way north; we’re now following the contours of the Green River. Ride around the labyrinths of Soda Springs Basin and past Candlestick Tower before reaching the welcome shade of Potato Bottom’s cottonwood trees and our camp for the night.
  • 4
    Day number 4
This morning we will tackle the challenging Hardscrabble incline and visit prehistoric Indian ruins at a lookout point above Fort Bottom. After descending from Hardscrabble to the river bottom, we will follow the Green River to Mineral Canyon and one last uphill. Our vans will meet us for the 2-hour drive back to Green River. Our expected time of arrival back at our headquarters is 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Trip Planning

Trip Planning

Although there is a greater chance of inclement weather on early and late season trips, a well-prepared biker will be able to appreciate the many advantages of these trips. Having the right clothing is essential. Wool, fleece, pile, Capilene, and Smartwool are natural and synthetic fabrics that retain their ability to insulate when wet (please note: cotton will not keep you warm when it is wet!). Adding to these inner layers with good rain- and wind-resistant jackets and pants will keep you warm, dry, and most importantly, happy. Your comfort on the trip starts with finding the right type of synthetic under- and outer-wear and quality rain gear. A prepared traveler is a happy traveler.

FAQ
FAQ
  • When and how do I meet up with the group?
Most people fly into Salt Lake City, Utah and then make the three-hour drive south to Green River. Alternatively, you can fly into Grand Junction, Colorado, and make the hour-and-a-half drive west to Green River. Plan to stay in a hotel in Green River the night before your trip (not included).
  • What will the camping be like?
You'll be camping for the duration of the trip. You will need to either bring your own camping gear or rent a kit from Holiday River Expeditions. A camp kitchen and common area will be set up by your guides, who will also prepare and cook all of the meals.
  • What kind of rider should I be for this trip?
This trip is recommended for intermediate and advanced riders. The White Rim bike trip follows an 86-mile route along the perimeter of the Island in the Sky district in Canyonlands National Park. Much of the route is gentle, hard-packed doubletrack. Although there are a few significant climbs, steep downhills, and areas of loose rock and sand, most technically challenging sections are short and can be easily walked. Your endurance is rewarded with endless stunning views, unique rock formations, and incredible cultural sites.
  • Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
For all dietary restrictions, please let Holiday River Expeditions know prior to the trip and they will accommodate you. All meals are included. Breakfast consists of eggs to order, omelets, or blueberry pancakes, in addition to fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, hot coffee, juice, and tea. Lunches are deli-style with pasta salads, bagels, vegetables, chicken caesar salad wraps, deli sandwiches. Snacks such as fresh fruit, nuts, chips, and raisins are also provided. Dinners typically feature Dutch oven lasagna, chicken fajitas, or surf-and-turf on the grill, in addition to potatoes, fresh salad, and of course, dessert. Ice water, lemonade, and soda will be provided. You can bring your own alcohol or other specialty beverages and your guides will be happy to keep them cold for you. No glass please.
  • How many people will be in my group?
Each trip will run with a minimum of 4 guests and a maximum of 12 guests.
  • Is there a minimum age required for the trip?
12 is the minimum age for this trip.
  • I'm ready to book, what next?
Per Holiday River Expeditions policy, a $300 per person deposit is due at the time of booking in order to confirm your spot. The balance is due 60 days prior to departure. If you are booking within 60 days of departure, the full amount is due at the time of booking. Once you book on evo.com, you’ll be introduced to Holiday River Expeditions who will help you prepare and plan for your trip.
  • What about COVID-19?
Last year marked a watershed change in many of our lives; wearing masks, socially distancing… you have likely hard-wired many new habits into your daily routine. We are hoping that with the 2021 season we won’t need such a level of vigilance, but in an effort to always be prepared for anything, we are planning ahead like we will. We will of course continue to follow all local, state, and federal guidelines to ensure the health and safety of our entire team, and our wonderful guests. You will receive detailed information from HRE about amendments and procedures due to Covid-19, but these include health screening requirements (ie limiting risk of exposure 7-10 days prior to trip, taking temperatures upon arrival), smaller group sizes, face coverings, cleaning & sanitizing procedures, physical distancing in vehicles, hand washing & sanitizing, outdoor food service, and on-trip medical response.
  • What if I need to cancel? Who do you recommend for travel insurance?
evo defers to the cancellation policy of Holiday River Expeditions, which has been amended to be more flexible due to Covid-19. If cancellations are made prior to 60 days before the trip, monies will be refunded less a $50.00 service charge per person. If cancellations are made within 59 days of the trip date, monies will be credited towards a future Holiday River Expeditions trip in 2022 or 2023. In the case of cancellation due to the inability to get to the meeting point due to travel ban or flight cancellation, your non-refundable payment will be credited + a 10% additional credit to a 2022 or 2023 Holiday River Expeditions trip. Please note that you will be responsible for change or cancel fees related to pre or post trip flights, rental cars, hotels, etc. We strongly recommend travel insurance in case of accident, trip interruption, or in case you are forced to cancel your trip. We’ve partnered with World Nomads, they can provide instant quotes.
Testimonials
Amazing downhill stretches on the first and third days. Delicious food and beautiful views the entire journey! Grueling uphill battles are few and far between, but they make the descents that follow much more rewarding. I am a better human being for having gone on this ADVENTURE!

My experience on the White Rim was life changing! I have not spent a lot of time in the Moab area and was completely blown away by the scenery, wildflowers, superb biking and above all the hospitality provided by our guides, Dustin and Sam.

A great experience from start to finish. The staff always was kind and courteous and made the whole trip incredibly memorable! The guides were top notch with their knowledge of the White Rim, the geology, biking tips, etc. They were great cooks and so fun to be around. We loved the 'instant gratification stations', made to order eggs and omelets and general care they took for us. It was evident that they loved what they do and cared immensely about our safety, comfort and well being. We all cannot wait to do it all again!
