2021-2022 CAPiTA Mega Mercury Review

New for 21/22, CAPiTA introduces the Mega Mercury. Built off the same shape as the fan favorite Mercury, it features an upgraded construction only The Mothership could offer. Built with 100% clean energy, this board features  an FSC Certified 3D Thermopolymer Starship Core, which blends premium electronically selected Poplar with post-consumer Thermopolymer channels to create CAPiTA’s most mega premium lightweight and explosive core to date. On top of that, it features a Hyperdrive Base with The Mothership’s Moonshot Pro-Tune – a speedy combination that will leave all other riders in the dust.

About the Snowboard

I found the Mega Mercury to be an extremely versatile and premium board. Whether I was just cruising the mountain on a sunny afternoon or searching out pow stashes on a storm day, this board handled it all. I really enjoyed it in the park as well as it’s an amazing combination of lightweight and snappy – perfect for a day of sessioning park jumps. Honestly, this board blew me away with its speed and I look forward to racing it in the next banked slalom! I would highly recommend this board to any rider who doesn’t sacrifice anything over the quality of their ride.

Technical Details

Before we dive into the tech specs of the CAPiTA Mega Mercury, it’s important to know that it was born at CAPiTA’s very own factory – The Mothership. Located in Austria, The Mothership handcrafts each board using 100% clean energy with zero CO2 emissions that leads to zero ozone depletion and zero global warming potential. Recently given the Energy Globe Award, The Mothership prides itself in renewable energies and the conservation of resources.

Now, let’s get to the nitty gritty - The CAPiTA Mega Mercury is an elevated take on the tried and true Mercury. With a directional twin shape, this board features CAPiTA’s Resort V2 Profile that has camber stretching from 5cm outside the insert packs and transitions to reverse camber in the tip and tail. This profile gives the board power through turns and plenty of pop for jumps, while providing float in deep snow and forgivingness in sketchy landings. The Mega Merc also features New Age Directional Sidecut with Death Grip – basically, this progressive sidecut features a slight reverse sidecut arc (Death Grip) in the mid-section to provide extra control through the turn and in variable conditions.

The real innovation with the Mega Merc happens in its construction. Starting from the base up, this board features CAPiTA’s Hyperdrive ultra-high, molecular weight sintered base with special additives and The Mothership’s Moonshot Pro Tune – a combination built for speed. The pièce de resistance of this board’s construction is the FSC certified 3D Thermopolymer Starship Core. Utilizing an advanced electronic sorting system, CAPiTA selects mega-premium Poplar graded by weight and grain consistency, then bonds it with post-consumer recycled Thermopolymer channels to form this futuristic hybrid core. It doesn’t stop there - CAPiTA laminates it together with Triax Holysheet fiberglass and Megacarbon Array to provide maximum strength, durability, and explosive performance. Lastly, it’s topped off with the Megalite Skin Topsheet to protect its guts while remaining 60% more lightweight than traditional topsheets.

Ride Impressions:

Honestly, the Mega Mercury was one of my favorite all mountain directional twins that I have ridden in a while. It was super versatile through all different types of terrain, and you can’t deny the tech that goes into making this board lightweight, explosive, and fast.

On groomers and cruising sidehits, I found the Mega Mercury to be a pleasant combination of powerful yet playful. The camber between the bindings and Death Grip created a solid base for laying down carves even through suspect conditions. At slower speeds, I found the reverse camber in the tip and tail to shorten up the ride and create a more playful feel.

In the park, the Mega Mercury excelled through the jump lines at Mt. Hood.  I found it super stable tracking into larger jumps and it had plenty of pop off the lip. In the air, this board is remarkably light weight and doesn’t feel like it’s there at all. The reverse camber was forgiving on sketchy landings and was super fun to butter around the flow park as well. I did feel a little bad taking such a nice board through the jibs – don’t wanna mess up that Moonshot Pro Tune! However, it was a nice combination of loose but locked in on rails.

In pow, I found this board to float remarkably well for a directional twin – I didn’t have to lean back terribly hard to keep the nose above the snow. However, with it being more twin like, I was sure to stomp any pow landings between the bindings – especially after I tomahawked a few times through some thicker snow. I did find this board to be a little soft for the heavy wet snow of the PNW and made sure to compensate for that with landing bolts as often as possible.

Pros

  • Lightweight - feels like it's not there in the air.
  • Versatile - can handle anything the mountains throw at it.
  • Fast - you won't be coming in last place in your local banked slamon on this board!

Cons

  • A little soft - watch out for heavy snow.
  • White topsheet - No one likes a dirty topsheet.
  • People will ask you about it - it looks crazy!

Who's It For?

Built for the rider who prioritizes their snowboard over everything else, the Mega Mercury is an ultra-premium board for those who are looking for the best ride around.  This rider desires to take on the entire mountain - park, pow, groomers, sidehits, banked slaloms – and needs a board to handle it all with ease. They have an affinity for speed and smooth style and don’t like being the last one down the hill.
