2024 Bataleon Whatever Snowboard Review

The Lowdown

The Bataleon Whatever Snowboard is perfectly named. Whatever condition, whatever terrain, whatever rider: this board is going to perform. This board is equipped with a directional shape, centered stance, and a medium flex which makes it extremely capable anywhere you take it. The Whatever feels stable yet playful and is perfect for the type of rider who doesn’t stick to one area of the mountain. It feels solid and holds an edge when you’re flying down a groomer, but floats and turns effortlessly in the powder. Ride pow all morning and then go rip some park laps after lunch. If you’re looking for a one-board-quiver that really does it all, look no further.

Technical Details

This snowboard wouldn't be the ATV that it is without some pretty cool tech. It has traditional camber that has a medium flex which feels playful where you want it and stable where you need it. It's 3BT (Triple Base Technology) helps for effortless turns in the powder and smooth edge to edge transitions that are less susceptible to catching. The dual carbon super tubes on either side of the board provide extra snap and liveliness to the the camber. The board also features a super fast sintered base and a poplar and paulownia wood core that is both light and strong. One of my personal favorite features is the backseat inserts that are 4 cm behind the bottom inserts. Super deep day? No problem. Just set your bindings back and enjoy the ride.

Ride Impressions

I had a lot of fun riding the Whatever.  It felt familiar and easy to get used too.  I feel like it's the type of board that anyone could hop on and get used too quickly.

Groomers/Side Hits
The first few laps I rode on the board was perfect corduroy groomers early in the morning. It held it's edge and felt solid at high speeds. It took me a second to get used to the 3BT when I was buttering around, but once I got a feel for it, it was super fun. The board feels a little bit wider than I'm used to which made my edge to edge transitions on harder surfaces feel a little bit slower, but this is where the 3BT shines. Even though it felt slightly wide under foot, the early rise of the 3BT makes it harder to catch an edge.

Powder
The majority of my time on this board was in the powder and side-country at Alpental. I set it back a little bit on one of the deeper days I was riding and it had no problem staying afloat. The 3BT felt super surfy in deeper snow and made turning super fun. The medium flex of the board gave it enough stiffness to push through choppier conditions while still feeling forgiving and playful. I hit some drops and jumps and the landings felt super solid.

Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆

Pros

  • A versatile one-board-quiver.
  • Light and responsive.
  • Unique feeling 3D base technology that is easy to get used to. 3BT is FUN.

Cons

  • Could be a little soft for heavier riders who like more aggressive boards.
  • A little bit wide. Could feel a little scary on ice or chunky hard-pack.
  • Probably wouldn't be the best for a dedicated park board, but it could still do the job.

Who Is It For?

The Bataleon Whatever snowboard would be a great choice for an intermediate all-mountain rider who likes to ride a little bit of everything. Maybe you aren't quite sure what type of rider you are yet and are looking for something to take you to that next level. This board would be awesome to explore different styles of snowboarding without sacrificing performance.

The Bottom Line

The 2024 Bataleon Whatever is built for everything and everyone. It has intuitive technology that helps it to perform well in a variety of conditions and terrains. In a world of super specialized boards, this takes a different approach. Instead of focusing in on one discipline of snowboarding, it set's it's sights on all of them. If you are the type of person that doesn't check the conditions and just heads straight for the hill ready for anything, this board is going to help you have a good time with whatever the day has in store. It's easy to ride and just dang fun.

Riding Style & Ability Level: I would consider myself an all-mountain freerider. A bit of a jack of all trades, master of none kind of snowboarder. I take a pretty skate-inspired approach to the mountain. I like to go fast and have fun. I love powder and park and anything in between.
